Five different manufacturing groups started United Manufacturers Alliance in 1999. The UMA’s goal is to promote the alliance as a "virtual" company in an effort to establish obtaining new business. The business world has changed and major manufacturers are cutting down on the suppliers they are using and are looking for companies able to provide a complete service. The strength of the UMA should lead us into that direction in providing quality work to these companies. The UMA was formed after hearing about the Tool Town project in Dayton, Ohio. The UMA differs from Tool Town in that we include a variety of businesses, Tool Town is comprised mainly of machine and tool shops.
One result of the UMA is to try and keep jobs within the group if possible and working together to find out what each company has to offer. This will include tours of each facility. The UMA encourages members to promote each other in job dealings with other businesses. Talks have also included the possibility of producing a product locally using all of the members in the process.
Presently we are working on a tri-fold to promote the UMA in the business world. Marketing of the UMA we feel is the key to the existence of the group. Information will be sent to manufacturers in major area cities. A UMA directory is on-line on the CA Industries web site at www.caindustries.com/umadir.htm, also updates are included on the web site at www.caindustries.com/uma.htm. We also have been working with Larry Stelzer of the Mercer County Economic Department in promoting the UMA to other area businesses. The UMA has also had contacts with Van Wert and Auglaize Counties about working together in the future as a regional group.
